A Guide to the Sky, Telescopes, and Telescope Programs

University City High School Astronomy Club

UCHS has an active Astronomy Club, sponsored by Mr. Scott Patterson, a bright, young, inspring AP Physics teacher.

They have a H-alpha Solar Telescope, but did not yet have a "normal" nighttime scope.

New!

Thank you to the several Bentley Colleagues who designated their individual STEM Grants to the UCHS telescope program.

We were able to get an amazing scope to build a program around: a Meade LX200 10" GoTo Schmidt-Cassegrain.  To maximize value, we bought used rather than new, info on the newest equivalent model is here (our optics are slightly different).  User Manual here (one of them)

Mike Fowler of Orange County Telescopes, the only showroom south of downtown Los Angeles, treated us very well and was very patient through the requisition process.  Great guy and great store.

Below is Mike handing the scope over to Scott.  Kenny lurks in the background.

Here was the wishlist of what we had been trying to get for them with the Bentley 2018-2019 STEM Grant.  We did way better than we expected!

November 2019
Below is a (bad) shot of the group checking out a couple of 10" dobsonian scopes (one shown) in early November. Note the scope is aimed at Jupiter, which is close to setting.

Here is some of the Club at the November 11, 2019 Mercury Transit.

A white light filter shot of the Sun.  Note the tiny dot at the 5:00 position: Mercury.
